We are safe so who would you keep
Re: We are safe so who would you keep
On the assumption that the budget for next year will again not be great compared to most of the competition, I'm sure Tommy and his Management team will think very carefully on any of the existing squad as to whether to recommend any to the BOD for contract renewals. The previous season was a little different as we'd only just missed the play offs so the league season overall had been much better. I'd think we definetely need to strengthen midfield and it would great if we could afford to sign Woodhouse. More fundamentally perhaps the whole way we play needs review as Barham often struggles effectively being the lone striker and Thomas seems more like a backup impact replacement.

I think Woodhouse might go to a league team. Could maybe do with a veteran centre back/leader?

I would obviously see it as a priority to add Barham to the list above. The rest need a long hard look.
I think I'd come down on the side of keeping:
Akpan
Anderson
Jones A
Scott
That would be 12 players which feels like about the right number given that we've been worse this season than last.

No thanks to AJ, I like the guy but he's been a pretty limited player since his injury.
I'd like to keep Harfield but that needs to be a medical/fitness decision made with a cold heart.
I'd take a punt on Maja, something about him I like and he seems very good at coming off the bench and shoring up the midfield.
It won't be a popular choice but I'd also give Corbett and Mullins another year.
As for the loanees, I'd love to see if we can bring in Woodhouse.

I am expecting massive changes to the squad as I’m not expecting the same management team.

I find Barham really hard to get a read on. He does the running around thing well and scores just about often enough to not raise eyebrows (and of course he seems to have a knack for the big occasion), but you see CF who are good for the level and it's night and day compared to what we have. Jack can't really create his own shot and seems to thrive at the back post and with hitting first time shots from the edge of the box.Marcus ex W.Midlands Shot wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 8:45 amI would obviously see it as a priority to add Barham to the list above. Put another way, perhaps he's good enough to contribute but not to spearhead an attack. Also he's not getting any younger.

You all need to accept that Junior will still be here, IF TW is still manager. As he has another year, it looks likely. I'm sure they will try and bury the news of a new contract post the Trophy final, but I'm sure Junior will be signed up again. Then we will have the same issues as this season.

We saw Jack was good enough contributing with Stokes and Tolaj last year. He had a significant part in their success.Silasgoldeen wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 10:00 amI find Barham really hard to get a read on. Agreed and Henry and Barrett are both thriving behind him now. Just find this type of role quite hard to get a handle on. Like if he's not there how much worse are we? Genuinely no idea.redblueuptoyou wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 11:59 amWe saw Jack was good enough contributing with Stokes and Tolaj last year. Re: We are safe so who would you keep
Of those not signed already, there are very few, if any, which should realistically be trying to keep. We've narrowly dodge relegation again this year which tells you that the squad is poor.
As long as daddy is here, I'd expect our midfield maestro to still be here too, unfortunately.

Re: We are safe so who would you keep
It is strange that most years (when we have done poorly) so many people on here suggest keeping a lot of players. I don't get it.Aldershot_Rob wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 12:59 pm Of those not signed already, there are very few, if any, which should realistically be trying to keep. Beyond the ones we already have signed, and fortunately they are the best of this bunch, I cant see why we would want any others, excluding the loanees...
Re: We are safe so who would you keep
Unlike other years though, I feel.there is a decent side in there somewhere. We had to completely rebuild our defence mid season when we lost Jenkins, Harfield Scott Akpan and Maghoma.
We also have to put up with shoehorning the wage thief into the middle of the park.
It's a shame we couldn't have seen the below for the majority of the season, as I think its definitely competitive.
Dewhurst
Woodhouse Jenkins Harfield
Akpan Tetek Hargreaves R.Jones
Frost
Barrett Barham
With JVS Scott A.Jones Maja Ghandour Henry Widdrington Armitage Thomas etc in reserve.
I think if we had a full strength side we would have been nowhere near the bottom 4.

Re: We are safe so who would you keep
Fully agree with you there CH. A full strength team would have had the class to execute our game plan properly, play around and cover for Junior, and to better overcome the inevitable challenge once other teams sussed how to get at us. Would have been comfortably mid-table at least.CH wrote: ↑Tue Apr 29, 2025 10:33 am Unlike other years though, I feel.there is a decent side in there somewhere.
