Not Shots related. Football Italia

Post by Birdman »

I used to enjoy those footy programmes back in the ‘90’s, both the Sunday afternoon live Serie A matches and the Saturday show where James Richardson would amongst other things discuss the Italian newspapers whilst enjoying a cup of coffee in a random Italian cafe, interviews with various players plus giving us a glimpse of Italian life (the sun always seemed to shine). It was all a bit …. different.

Anyone else enjoy them?

Yes definitely. I liked Italian football anyway (we were all very excited when gazza went over), lots of good players in the league back then. James Richardson was very funny too.

Best produced football programme ever. Regurgitated as Football Italiano on Channel 5 but not a patch on the original.

It was brilliant and certainly something I religiously watched. The intro music was good too, with the trademark "Gooooooooooolazo" at the end.

Great times. Certainly no mention of the XG or low block.

I was always mightily impressed by the fact that James actually seemed to be able to speak passable Italian in the interviews! Very classy...

Of course, his Italian may have been the 1990s equivalent of Yaya Toure's English, for all I knew ...

Very good memories of this. Particularly Peter Brackley who was the very distinctive commentator. He never seemed to do anything other than this.

First football memory I have of watching any Englishman playing abroad. Always used to look out for Des Walker, Paul Ince and David Platt. Gazza of course. And Maldini who used to seemingly have time to light a fag, wave to the crowd and play a 60 yard pass on a pinhead before anyone got near him

Also co-hosted by Ray Wilkins - a wonderful chap, a smashing fella, one of the nicest people you could possibly wish to meet.

Was always surprised that James Richardson never became a bigger name than he is, superb, knowledgeable presenter who's a really nice guy. Maybe that was the issue..

He's doing the world's strongest man now I think!

But 100% agree.
