Arthur English was part of Aldershot's history. Last Friday would have been his 106th birthday, two days later "his" phoenix won at Wembley. Be good to think he was among those looking down on the game.

Watching the highlights back anyone else feel that Aaron Mclean's co-commentary was over critical of Shots before we went ahead in the game? Not sure he appreciated what our game plan was in dominating possession?

Sure it's been mentioned already, but due to the stick he's received I'll say it again, I thought Theo was excellent at Wembley. Lower league opposition but a final nonetheless. Seems to get on well with Barrett too which can only help Barrett

I felt he was his usual self in the first half, slow to cover back and prone to some loose passes - plus the quick wrestling match 10 minutes in. But once we got going second half he was excellent. We've seen this before, if we're dominating a game he gets more time on the ball and can play. It's when we're under the cosh that his inadequacies are more evident.CornishShot wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 10:57 pm Sure it's been mentioned already, but due to the stick he's received I'll say it again, I thought Theo was excellent at Wembley. But yes, he did play his part in the win and just about stayed out of trouble!

I don’t think he said anything that Tommy and the players didn’t say after the game, first half everyone could see whilst having control of the game that we were slow, Aaron knows far more about us and National League than other pundits. We allowed Spennymoor to keep a good shape and made it tougher for ourselves to get the ball forward more than we did.Weybourne Shot wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 6:27 pm Watching the highlights back anyone else feel that Aaron Mclean's co-commentary was over critical of Shots before we went ahead in the game? 100% this. Having moved North of the Border I have only watched games on tv and after all the negativity on this site was expecting a pretty average performance at the very best.
However I thought he was one of the top performers on the day. Always in the right place and apart from one silly challenge early on broke up play really well. Every team needs someone to do the dirty work and on the day he did exactly that.

in the first half he gave the ball away when we had a corner and that led to their break where they nearly scored. It wasn't a particularly terrible mistake but I remember thinking "man, he's going to get a load of grief for this one". It was another example of our weakness against counter attacks though and Spennymoor might have made more of that given how much of the ball we had. But we didn't over commit numbers too often to be fair.
But otherwise I think he did well.
There were some heartfelt messages of support on twitter from Cameron Hargreaves who plays next to him every week so I'd say the players are fully bought into what Theo brings.

The Rec sadly is the clubs achilles heel. It seriously puts people off coming. Why would the local middle-class local football lovers work hard all week for the trappings of a comfortable life tolerate it? Harsh words but true.lowerbourneshot wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 1:27 pmA new ground with modern facilities would help . Look a Wembley Sunday (not that I'd expect that ) but easy to get served with plenty of choice . A nice comfy clean stadium . I love the rec but it's had its day .ShotOnTarget wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 9:01 amIt's a common theme ACA. I rarely also go these days for various good reasons, and I'm guessing that applies to many of the 16,000 odd extras who attended. I even had one friend who said he was gutted he couldn't go. His last game was against Lymington and New Milton decades ago.ACA wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 7:37 am It was my first game in a very long time, going to football lost its sparkle for me a few years ago when my Dad was no longer able to go. But there was no way either of us were going to miss the chance to see the Shots play at Wembley and it was a great day out - the chance to go to football as a family for the first time in ages, seeing old friends etc. It was also great to see such a professional performance on the pitch, especially given our habit over the years of failing to turn up for the big occasion! I won't forget that day, and maybe I'll make more of an effort to get back to the Rec once or twice next season.
People justifiably assume the core support is the same 2, 2.5k fans but Sunday shows that it's very likely a high degree of churn exists.
It's sad that the Club can't grow the fanbase. I have my theories but that's not a topic right now.
Let's hope this extraordinary event is a wake up call for all who care about the Club, especially those in a position to make things happen.
However, with the potential for all to see evident on Sunday, if some serious interest isn't stirred somewhere, I'll be gob-smacked.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

The Rec may not be the loveliest football ground in the world, but as I said before I don’t think people go to football to admire the architecture and facilities of the stadium as priority. You could say by the same analogy that people won’t want to go to a Wetherspoons, but the draw is the product and not the surroundings.

I agree with you. I thought he was much more involved than usual, helped out a lot in defense, made one silly challenge and could have had a couple of attempts from distance, I'd actually tried to put a bet on for him to scoreCornishShot wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 10:57 pm Sure it's been mentioned already, but due to the stick he's received I'll say it again, I thought Theo was excellent at Wembley. As far as I remember, he didn't get booked either!
If he'd played like that all season then he'd probably be on a few more keep lists.
